Scouts 7-17-07 (Tenderfoot Req 10a)

We met Tuesday night for the the first portion of requirement 10 for the tenderfoot badge. The boys were able to pass off the majority of the requirements for their tenderfoot at the campout and this is one of the few remaining. They had to do push ups, pull ups, sit ups, a standing long jump and a 1/4 mile run. All of the boys did awesome! To pass off the requirement we will repeat all of these events after 30 days and the boys will have to show improvement in their "personal best" from this time. They are all committed to do it and I'm sure they can! Above are the marks they set this week, so they know what to gun for next time.

Tri-stake 11 year old campout

The 29th and 30th all 6 boys and 6 leaders and dads took part in the annual tri-stake 11 year old scout overnighter. As you can see from the photos below, there were a lot of great activities planned for the weekend and the boys we going non-stop from the moment they arrived till the moment we left. Everyone was completely wiped out by the end but the activities were great and a good time was had by all. They continue to impress everyone that they come in contact with by their example, and great spirit. They learned, worked, ate and played and represented the ward and their families in a tremendous manner. Enjoy the pictures below!

First Aid

They boys are all over first aid. They learned everything from how to carry an injured comrade to how to stabilize a variety of injuries. As hard as it is to believe for a scout overnighter, we didn't end up having to use any of their newly acquired first aid skills on any of the boys or leaders this trip!

Lashings

Afternoon service project

Friday after the classes the boys did a service project by clearing an area of loose wood and piling it all up. There was a contest for the biggest wood pile. We didn't end up winning, believe it or not, but we were pretty proud of our pile and the work that we were able to do.

Canoeing

They may look like 11 year old scouts but they row like vikings at sea. Luckily no one had to demonstrate their swimming ability in the pond.
Telford crosses Lake Bastian.

Camp

After the day's activities we headed for camp where the boys all pitched in and prepared a lovely meal, consisting of campout staples: hamburgers, hot dogs; Doritos, and orange soda. We all agreed that s'mores were a must. We couldn't have a campfire so we had to improvise and use the campstove and which resulted in the same gooey goodness.

Closing flag ceremony Friday night

Friday Evening Fireside

After the the flag ceremony Friday night we all gathered at the campfire for a program. There were songs and skits including a classic by our troop, and then we heard talks from members of the stake presidencies of the Parker, Highlands Ranch, and Castle Rock stakes. It was a great night.

Saturday Hike

Saturday morning we went on a "5 mile" nature hike (it was pushing it to call it a 5K). Our guide was able to point out a very wide variety of plants native to the area, and as you can see the nature was literally all around the boys.

Archery

The boys were also able to increase there archery skills. They stuck it to the hay bales, as seen above, and they learned how to make their own bow strings, and arrows (minus the vanes, oops). We got to see a shooting exhibition from some world class archers too. We watched them pop balloons, and hit targets on a foam deer from 100 yards away with ease. It was impressive!
